Carpentry in Vermont...you know you want to
I'm signed up for Basic Carpentry at Yestermorrow for May 5-9, camping onsite, and hopefully some nature time before and/or after. Who's in??? They're also offering Sustainable Treehouse Design and Construction that week. C'mon, I do everything by myself. You should come. Then we can rip apart the back of my house and rebuild it super pretty and maybe strawbailey or something because I'M GONNA LEARN HOW TO FRAME A MFKN HOUSE. In May. In the mountains of Vermont. In a tent. You know you want to take a potentially chilly solar shower in this:

Anyone have a tent one-person tent I can borrow? I can lend you a HIGH-QUALITY KITTY CAT as collateral.

My AIRQUOTES work boots AIRQUOTES are in the process of biting the dust. What are good and affordable big-girl work boots? How do you properly escape html characters to make fake tags for comedic value? I'll bet it's easy but I've used up my 2 minute quota, cuz it ain't 3 minutes worth of funny.

that shower looks awesome! i wonder if the zipper pull works as a door handle too. that'd be even more awesome.

hope you're doing well, and best of luck at your carpentry class!

I would be seriously tempted if it were in July instead of May.

Have you tried square brackets for fake tags?

When I worked in a factory I wore Caterpillars every day for years. This style is good because it laces so far down the toe, which overcomes some of the width issues I have with men's boots. Otherwise, I cannot say enough good things about the quality of Corcoran boots. I have a pair which I've worn probably 150 days a year for the past four years, and they barely show any wear at all.

Does buying Corcoran boots automatically mean that I love freedom and have to give up my commie pinko queer membership card? Another reason to hate buying new things: the politics of boots. Leather (animals, environmentally awful tanning procedures) or non (probably petroleum based, no less cruel considering the ongoing bloodbaths, don't last as long) is just the beginning.

But thanks for your input! That makes it easier. I'm definitely looking for a 5-10 year pair of boots if I can get away with it.

I own them and I still hate freedom as much as ever! USCav just has the lowest prices. :P

My main recommendation when trying on work boots, as far as things that might not occur to you in the store, is to squat down and make sure the toe isn't too bulky to be comfortable when your foot is bent that way. You know, for carpentry and whatnot.

(Shocked and dismayed I don't have a boot icon, wtf.)

What a cool program! Thanks for sharing. I already have basic skills but I'm looking into some of the other classes like Renovation and Designing Small Spaces since I'll be refinishing my basement in the near future.
I'm always available to lend a hand with home improvement projects. When the day comes that you are ready to rebuild the back of your house, just let me know when and where :)

I have a tent that I was thinking about freecycling, if you want to come over and look at it sometime, let me know. We can put it together in the living room to make sure all the poles are there. I can't speak to its waterproofness, though.

Foiled again!! Tentwise, I have a 4-person or so, and I'm looking for a small, light one for bike trips and such. If you think what you have is pretty compact and light, I'd love to take a look. Thanks!

you seem ridiculously rad (or loquaciously lovely? if you prefer).

So commence LJ and myspace 'stalking.'

If you prefer I retreat, holler, and I'll have my people call your people and sever internet ties.

This looks AWESOME! I want to learn to build my own house! I don't have the $750 or I'd go with you. I'll have to keep an eye on this site and catch the next one when it comes around again.

You know, before, during, and after registering for this class, this thought kept coming: "Why am I signing up for this class when I could just visit Anne and Smax and get some sweat equity?" And I answered it in a couple of ways.

1, asking 2 incredibly hardworking people to host me and teach me some construction in return for a pair of willing hands did NOT seem fair to the hosts, or sufficiently vacationey for the purpose of this trip, which is in fact my first vacation since--get this--Kenya. HA! Yeah, I've used up all the zen I gained soaking up rays on the beaches of Mombassa basically doing a 2-week barnraising, then coming home to face several months of soul-searching about imperialism and race! The constant low-level nausea is a clue that I need a for-real vacation very, very badly. You may be familiar with the feeling of overwork. :-)

2, I really want to learn this stuff soup to nuts, as much as possible in 5 days, and afterwards, I'll be that much more helpful to friends in Ohio. Seriously, when it comes to carpentry, I'm a total hatchet-person.

Anyway, I do indeed want to come help with stuff sometime sooner than later. Keep me posted on caravans from the east.

Well, I can't make it more vacationy out here. It ain't. However, as far as the whole soup-to-nuts thing goes, good on you. I have a hatchet myself, and I'm getting better at cutting tenons with it (trust me, for fenceposts its the fastest way) but I sure as hell wasn't two weeks ago. Its all about learning...

I have a one-to-two person tent that qualifies as lightweight and could qualify as ultralight if done properly. You'll need a ground tarp/footprint anyway, and this one specifically doesn't come with one (although making one out of a trip to G St. Fabrics and a few minutes with a sewing machine are a very real possibility). I won't be much help with the kitty part, tho.

I am intrigued about the carpentry camp. When it happens that I can see a further horizon than is visible right now, maybe I'll talk about how cool it would be to go before I wind up wimping out citing work stuff or baseball as a (poor) excuse. The zipper is cool, the chilly outdoor shower is even better.

I don't have work boots per se, but my Salmon wintertime boots have protected my feet from frostyness and falling stuff for 10+ years. Yes, they are leather. Yes, that is still the best material I know of for this purpose.

you'll also find that ampersand-ell-tee and ampersand-gee-tee (for less than and greater than) is the mark-up specify the angular brackets in your < hypertext >. See also http://www.htmlcodetutorial.com/characterentities_famsupp_69.html
